Meet your Mills family

Rebecca Merrett

School Supervisor

I am delighted to be starting my second year as the owner and School Supervisor of Mills International Preschool. I take immense pride in offering a loving, nurturing and emotionally and academically exciting school in which your children can explore and learn.

I have lived and worked in Hong Kong for more than twenty years and have been involved in international education for the past 15 years, opening kindergartens, primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong, Mainland China and Southeast Asia.

I graduated with a BA Hons in Law from the University of Sussex before later switching to journalism and then education. Hong Kong is truly my home, and my three children were all born and raised here, attending international school from preschool to Year 12.

The favourite part of my day is welcoming our children every morning, as they come into school. I love the little conversations we have together as they step into Mills.

When I’m not in school, I am a keen lifelong learner and recently took up rock climbing, so if you look up on a Sunday you may see me climbing the rocks above you!

Ms Emily

Head of English

My name is Ms Emily and I have had a wonderful upbringing split between South Africa, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. I am a psychology enthusiast, studying through the University of Essex, with a particular interest in SEN and additional needs teaching. Alongside my passion for educational psychology, I have also obtained a TEFL and a certificate in Letterland Phonics.

Over the past 9 years I have been lucky enough to have worked in early years education within a variety of settings. Through my experiences, I have discovered myself drawn towards more natural elements within teaching which take inspiration from Montessori, Reggio-Emilia and play-based activities. I believe that children learn best when they are having fun, taking part in something that interests them and when their individual learning styles and personalities are taken into consideration. I, therefore, aim for all our learning experiences to be exciting, varied, and memorable.

When I am not in the classroom I will most likely be found playing ‘tag’ or ‘hide-n-seek’ with my own little ball of energy, who currently attends Mills, venturing out into Hong Kong for a day adventure or simply relaxing with the ones I love.

I am very much looking forward to the year ahead and can’t wait to watch all our Mills students blossom!

Ms Tracy

Head of Mandarin

Hello! My name is Tracy and I am from mainland China. I have an MEd majoring in Curriculum and Instruction, from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Early Childhood Education, from the Education University of Hong Kong.

Before I came to Hong Kong, I taught IT in a school in mainland China, which was a wonderful 4 years. The students treated me as an elder sister. I designed a variety of activities to encourage them to explore the world and express their thinking, their feelings and ideas, and now we are still very good friends, as they still like to share their life experiences with me although they are working or studying in other countries.

Six years ago I became a kindergarten teacher, which has been my dream since childhood. For me, teaching children not only requires more interesting activities and more communication, but also requires more care and love. In the past 6 years, I’ve enjoyed designing topics of discussion based on children’s life experiences or the stories I have read with them. I love to watch these young minds grow, and treasure my part in preparing students for the future. In my spare time, I enjoy reading storybooks and even write some stories. I also like hiking, bike riding, and planting – when I eat the lettuce I planted, I feel so content!

I am delighted to be a part of the teaching team at Mills International Preschool, and I am looking forward to meeting you and your children at school.

Ms Arwin

Campus Manager

Hello! I was born and raised in Hong Kong. I graduated from City University of Hong Kong with a BA in Media and Communication.

I have always been passionate about working with children, and I am delighted to be part of the Mills team and happy to answer your questions and deal with parents’ needs.

I also like to pop into the classrooms to see the children working and playing, and love to get involved with their activities when I can – it’s a great way to get to know the individual students and build positive bonds with them around school.

I love travelling and exploring the world with my family. In my spare time, I often go hiking with my friends and like to visit places where I can sample yummy foods. I also enjoy having me-time at home and getting a chance to read books and play the piano.

Joanna Hotung

Founding School Supervisor

I’m delighted at the lovely school that Mills has become over the past 10 years. I founded the KG Group in 1996, inspired by my desire for a more well-rounded and enquiry-based education for my children.

Now my children are 29 and 27, and more than 60,000 students have passed through the doors of one of our centres and schools! I was educated in Hong Kong, Switzerland, Beijing, and the UK, and attended the University of London (BA Hons) and University of Warwick (MBA).

I am also a Licentiate Teacher of Speech and Drama (Distinction) from Trinity College London and I still enjoy preparing children for speech festivals and events. I am also Chairperson Emeritus at Youth Diabetes Action, Vice-Chairperson at Playright Children’s Play Association, Advisory Board member at Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong, as well as previously a board member of the Hong Kong Ballet and Bring Me A Book. I’m honoured to be the recipient of several awards including SCMP Woman of our Time and AmCham Entrepreneur of the Year.

Ms Lou

Teacher, K1

Hello! I’m Lou, a Filipina born and raised in Hong Kong. I gained a passion for teaching young children back in 2014 and earned my qualifications to teach in kindergartens from Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education.

Since 2014, I have had experience teaching Playgroup, Cambridge English, Pre-nursery and now K1. It is an honour to be a child’s first teacher in their life and work hand-in-hand with parents to ensure they experience a smooth transition into preschool. It is especially heartwarming to hear feedback from my previous students’ parents that their children have enjoyed coming into school since leaving my classroom. I believe in purposeful play while loudly singing my favourite nursery rhymes!

During my free time, I love to attend different fitness classes, like yoga and barre. I also enjoy spending time outdoors and find equal pleasure in staying home with my cats. I find joy in exploring new activities and taking a fitness class I have never taken before. Recently, I have been learning how to make stickers.

It is my pleasure to be a part of Mills International Preschool and I am thrilled to be moving up to K1 with my PN children.

Ms Louise

Teacher, Playgroup

Hi! I’m Louise. I was born in the Philippines but moved to Hong Kong when I was three years old. I’ve grown to love and consider Hong Kong as home. I have an Associate Degree in Psychology from City University and also a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Needs Education from the Education University of Hong Kong. I also carry a certificate in the Play Project for children with Autism.

I have had five years of experience teaching a mix of Playgroup, Nursery and English for young learners.

Growing up in Hong Kong and being part of both international and locals schools – I appreciate diversity in cultures, community and especially inclusive education! I am very passionate about child development, psychology and well-being. All children should have a chance to learn, grow and experience education in a positive way. It is so important that each child learns in their own unique way and as a teacher able to guide them to their full potential! And have a great time in class.

In my spare time, I love cooking (and eating), singing, playing the guitar, going to the gym, spending time with friends and family, and watching the occasional crime documentary. I am also an advocate for mental health awareness for youth.

Ms Diana

Mandarin Teacher, PN and K1

Ni hao ma? 你好嗎?Hello everyone! I am very excited to join Mills as a Mandarin Teacher and can’t wait to meet all the friends in my class! I am looking forward to this new academic year and getting to know every single child through teaching them Mandarin using love, care and fun.

I am from Guangdong and have a Bachelor’s degree in English Education with the University of Hubei and a Master of Arts degree in Chinese Literature from the Hong Kong Metropolitan University. In addition, I have a certificate in the National Putonghua Proficiency Test. I believe teaching children requires patience, love and care as well as many interesting activities that will appeal to them. A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and install a curiosity for lifetime learning.

My love for early years teaching started when I was volunteering to work at Mills. I am so delighted to have the opportunity to use my teaching experience. I do like Chinese stories and enjoy sharing these with Mills children. I have two daughters – and treasure every moment watching them grow. I know that quality early years education builds a strong foundation and prepare children for their future journey.

In my spare time, I love to read with my children, travel and going to concerts with my family. I am delighted to be part of the Mills team and will see you soon!

Ms Sarah

Teacher, K2

My name is Sarah and I am an early years educator from Hong Kong. I have been working with young children for around seven years and I am currently finishing up my Postgraduate degree in Early Childhood Education at the University of Hong Kong. I am delighted to be a part of the Mills team and I am looking forward to meeting you all!

I believe that all children (and adults!) are blessed with gifts and talents and as a teacher, I get the wonderful opportunity to be able to bring that out of them and nurture their potential. Young children are also so full of childlike wonder (and sometimes they say the silliest things) which makes my day. The early years are also some of the most important years to lay a strong foundation of knowledge, understanding and skills.

My favourite part of teaching children is also forging relationships not just with the child, but with the family. It always feels incredibly rewarding being able to be a part of a child’s growth throughout the year. Aside from teaching, I also enjoy doing yoga and I have a pet rabbit named Addie (who is always a hit with the children!)

Ms Jasmine

Teaching Assistant

I was born and raised in Hong Kong, and adopted by two loving parents. My mum is American, my dad is British, and I have an elder sister who works for Google in London.  I graduated with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Early Childhood Education) at the Education University of Hong Kong. Before this I completed a Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design from Raffles International College Hong Kong.

I love exploring and trying new things, especially food. At the end of the day I love to go home and prepare my lunch for the next day - it gives me a chance to be creative and indulge in some ‘play time’. I absolutely love hotpot and dim sum. They are my favourite foods in the world!

Creative arts, painting and organising are some of my favourite activities! I am happiest in the classroom whilst teaching art and messy play! I am super organised and have an eye when it comes to displays around the school. I have been teaching at Mills International Preschool for the past eight years, and am passionate about children and very grateful to engage with them every day as a teacher.

Ms Singh

Teaching Assistant

Hello. I am Ms Singh and I graduated with a High Diploma in Early Childhood Education from the Education University of Hong Kong. I was born and raised in Hong Kong.

I have always been passionate about teaching young learners. I enjoy being around children with their endless energy and creativity. It is such an amazing experience seeing them grow into such wonderful and beautiful human beings, which is what motivates me to work even harder every day.

As a child, I was always fascinated by the significance of a teacher in one’s life. So that is exactly what I want to do for my students. I want to provide a safe space for them where they can express themselves and learn with different forms of arts.

As for my spare time, I enjoy spending quality time with my family, reading fiction and exploring various types of places in Hong Kong with my friends. I can’t wait to meet you all!

Ms Raphael

I’m Raphael and I was born and raised in Hong Kong. I am a fluent Cantonese and English speaker. I have a Bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education from Yew Chung College.

I believe in play-based environments that stimulate young minds and inspires learning. I love seeing children’s eyes light up when they are interested in something – particularly when I sing or read stories to them. I am grateful to have the opportunity to work at Mills to engage with young children and can’t wait to meet the children in my class!

In my spare time, I love dancing, creating and writing stories, and drawing. I enjoy spending time with my family at the weekends and they are often very helpful when I’m brainstorming for new and fun activities for the children.

I am thrilled to be part of the Mills team and look forward to meeting you all soon and playing a key role in helping every child to settle into their classroom with confidence and enjoyment.
